About This Site

We at the NCEO created this site to serve not only the employee ownership community but also the broader public in communicating the extent and nature of employee stock ownership.

Who We Are

NCEO logo

We are the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO), a nonprofit membership and research organization that provides information on all aspects of broad-based employee ownership. Because we are U.S.-based, our materials (including this site) mainly deal with the U.S.

A Focus on ESOPs

Most of the information, and all of the map data, on this site pertain to ESOPs (see How an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) Works if you aren't familiar with ESOPs). There are two main reasons for that. First, ESOPs are the main vehicle for broad-based employee ownership in the U.S. (see our Statistical Profile of Employee Ownership). Second, the U.S. government systematically gathers and releases data on ESOPs both large and small because they are qualified retirement plans for which the sponsoring company must file a Form 5500 with the Department of Labor.

Feedback Welcomed

We welcome feedback on how we're doing and what you'd like to see added to the site. Email us at For general NCEO contact information, see the bottom of this page.

What Is This Site For?

Our main site at features a wealth of information about employee ownership, but we wanted to develop a different site for a different set of material, so that everyone could find our newly developed map, infographics, and other visual guides in one place. And this site was created not only for the existing employee ownership community but also for members of the broader public who may be interested in how employee ownership can build stronger companies and communities.

Here, you can literally see the spread of employee ownership by, for example, interacting with a zoomable, searchable map of ESOPs in the U.S. coded by start date. And members of the press, employee ownership advocates, academics, and others can find infographics to share and use.

Spread the Word! Our Linking Policy

We would be delighted if you spread the word about the resources on this site and link back to us. If you link to the map on this site, please link to the relevant page on on this site (, not directly to the embedded map (whose URL may not even stay the same over time). Similarly, when you use an infographic on your site, please link back to the page where it came from rather than the image itself.
