Interactively Mapping the American ESOP

To view and explore our maps of U.S. ESOPs, select a map below. You can zoom in and out, select a company marker to view information about a particular company, and search for companies by name.

ESOPs are the main vehicle for broad-based employee ownership in the U.S., and they are also the only one for which comprehensive information can be obtained to construct nationwide maps such these. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) collects information yearly on qualified retirement plans such as ESOPs on Form 5500 and its schedules. The DOL then releases that information, which we compile into our U.S. ESOP Company Database. We use this information to generate the maps below. Because some companies may be sensitive about releasing public but obscure data such as the number of participants, we omit such information or place it into broad groups such as "500 or more employees." Some companies are omitted here because their filings lack the plan classification code identifying them as ESOPs. Note: Depending on your device, Web browser, and Internet connection, a map may take anywhere from five seconds to a minute or more to fully load. Under Windows, for example, Internet Explorer is slower at this than Chrome or Firefox.
